History, pistachios & island life — a short ferry from Athens
Aegina captures everything people love about the Greek islands, while offering a character all its own. Just a short ferry journey from Athens, it feels wonderfully removed from the pace of everyday life, welcoming visitors with its relaxed atmosphere, rich history and timeless charm.
The bustling harbour town of Aegina is the heart of the island. Stroll along the waterfront and you'll find colourful fishing boats bobbing in the harbour, fishermen unloading the day's catch, lively cafés filled with locals, and traditional tavernas serving fresh seafood and authentic Greek dishes.
Beyond the main town, Aegina reveals a slower, more tranquil side. Picturesque villages such as Perdika, Agia Marina and Souvala offer a glimpse of traditional island life. Along the coastline, you'll find a wonderful mix of organised beaches and secluded coves, with crystal-clear waters ideal for swimming and snorkelling.
Nature lovers will appreciate the island's rugged beauty — pine-covered hills, scenic walking trails and dramatic coastal views. The magnificent Temple of Aphaia stands proudly on a hilltop overlooking the Saronic Gulf, part of the legendary Sacred Triangle with the Parthenon and the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion.
No visit would be complete without sampling the island's most famous product: its pistachios — celebrated throughout Greece for their exceptional flavour.
